What is polycarbonate?

2021-07-06

Polycarbonate (referred to as PC) is a polymer containing carbonate ester group in the molecular chain. According to the structure of the ester group, it can be divided into aliphatic group, aromatic group, aliphatic group - aromatic group and other types. The low mechanical properties of aliphatic and aliphatic - aromatic polycarbonate limit their application in engineering plastics. At present, only aromatic polycarbonate has been industrially produced.Because of the particularity of polycarbonate structure, it has become the general engineering plastics with the fastest growth rate among the five major engineering plastics.

Polycarbonate (Polycarbonate, referred to as PC) is a kind of colorless transparent qualitative thermoplastic material. It gets its name from the CO3 group inside it.

Polycarbonate is colorless and transparent, heat resistant, impact resistant, flame retardant BI grade, and has good mechanical properties at ordinary operating temperature.Compared with polymethyl methacrylate, polycarbonate has good impact resistance, high refractive index, good machinability, and requires the addition of an inhibitor to meet UL94 V-0 grade.

But polymethyl methacrylate is less expensive than polycarbonate and can be bulk polymerized to produce large devices. With the increasing production scale of polycarbonate, the price difference between polycarbonate and polymethyl methacrylate is narrowing.

Polycarbonate can not be exposed to hot water above 60℃ for a long time. Pyrolytic gas will be emitted when the polycarbonate burns, and the plastic will be scorched and blistered, but it does not catch fire. The ignition source will be extinguished, and the rare and thin phenol odor will be emitted.

Polycarbonate has poor wear resistance. Some polycarbonate devices for wear applications require special surface treatment.Density: 1.20-1.22g /cm Linear expansion rate: 3.8×10 cm/cm°C

Thermal deformation temperature: 130°C.Not resistant to strong acid, not resistant to strong alkali.Polycarbonate is acid and oil resistant.Polycarbonate is resistant to ultraviolet light and strong alkali.
